A Comprehensive Indonesian-English Dictionary

By Alan M. Stevens and A. Ed. Schmidgall-Tellings

The most authoritative and up-to-date resource on the Indonesian language today, A Comprehensive Indonesian-English Dictionary will be an essential reference for students, tourists, business people, and scholars of Indonesian.

“One can only guess at the effort which has gone into this magnum opus…this massive new contribution to Indonesian lexicography.... There is not space to discuss all the many features of this dictionary.... The book, besides being massive, is beautifully produced and reflects credit on the Ohio University Press and the American Indonesian Chamber of Commerce as well as the compilers.”

Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society

“If a library has only one Indonesian-English reference book, this should be it.... Highly recommended.”

CHOICE

“Weighing a hefty five pounds and providing users with definitions to tens of thousands of terms, this substantial dictionary is surely the most authoritative and comprehensive Indonesian dictionary available.”

American Reference Books Annual

“Real life examples...turn A Comprehensive Indonesian-English Dictionary into more than a practical aid for reading other texts: it is a joy to read the dictionary itself. In short, the dictionary is a must for anyone who is interested in Indonesia beyond the shallow level of the culturally autistic expatriate.... The indefinite article in the title of A Comprehensive Indonesian-English Dictionary is too modest for this volume that will serve well for many years to come. Stevens and Schmidgall-Tellings: those are names to remember.”

Indonesia

This major new dictionary is the most modern and inclusive Indonesian-English dictionary available. The product of more than twenty years of research and documentation of the Indonesian language and culture, A Comprehensive Indonesian-English Dictionary is designed to be as user-friendly as possible. Root words, meanings, proverbs, and idioms, compounds that begin with the root word, and derivatives are given. Thousands of sample sentences from primary sources illustrate meaning and usage; no sentences are invented, ensuring complete authenticity and reliability.

Using an array of primary and secondary sources, from the classical language to the most recent slang, Alan M. Stevens has completed the work he and the late A. Ed. Schmidgall-Tellings began two decades ago. Tens of thousands of new entries bring meaning and understanding to changes in technology, culture, politics, and lifestyle. Included as well is the language of government, the law, and banking, with thousands of accounting, tax, and legal terms. Technical terms in all fields, including petroleum, steel, engineering, geology, chemistry, mining, medical, and shipping, make A Comprehensive Indonesian-English Dictionary of international usefulness.

Born and raised in New York City, Alan M. Stevens has been traveling to Indonesia to do research and to work since 1960. He is the author of articles on the Indonesian lexicon and on phonology, a book on Madurese grammar, and articles on Madurese phonology. He is coauthor of A Contemporary Indonesian-English Dictionary. He is a professor of linguistics at Queens College, City University of New York.

The late A. Ed. Schmidgall-Tellings was a freelance translator and author of many books and articles on the Indonesian language.

Additional Praise for A Comprehensive Indonesian-English Dictionary

“The new A Comprehensive Indonesian-English Dictionary passes the kinerja test with flying colours. Its coverage of new terms, borrowed words, acronyms and colloquialisms is excellent, as is its brief, but useful, summary of nonstandard nasalisation patterns and pronunciation notes. Its layout is one of the best I've seen. The pages are compact, allowing for relatively comprehensive coverage, but each derivative is highlighted and located on a new line within the main entry.”
