Cold War and Decolonization in Guinea Wins APC Book Award

Elizabeth Schmidt’s 2007 book, Cold War and Decolonization in Guinea, 1946–1958, is the winner of the African Political Science Group’s Best Book Award. Schmidt’s study provides the historical context behind Guinea’s bold 1958 decision for independence. The APCG is an affiliate of the American Political Science Association, International Studies Association, and African Studies Association. The award will be given at the ASA meeting in Chicago.

Zeller was part of a panel that discussed the social engineering of roads in the Beltway region.

Azores Named Best Book of the Year in Slate Survey

Azores, the 2008 collection of poetry by David Yezzi, was named one of the best books of 2008 by Slate, the online magazine. “Yezzi writes with insight and elegance about the lives we actually lead,” writes Slate contributor Adam Kirsch, ”about the ironic balance between violent feeling and regulated behavior that defines adulthood.” Yezzi will read from Azores on February 13th at the annual conference of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs.

Danny Miller, 1949–2008

Photo of Danny Miller Ohio University Press joins the academic and Appalachian community in mourning the loss of our friend and colleague Danny Miller. Our sympathies go out to his family, friends, and to his associates at Northern Kentucky University, where he was chair of the Department of Literature and Language. Along with Gurney Norman and Sharon Hatfield, Danny co-edited An American Vein: Critical Writings in Appalachian Literature, published in 2005. We will remember him for his energy, his keen insight, and for the generosity that he displayed in all aspects of his life and work.
