Olmanson Wins Jackson Prize
April 18, 2008

Eric Olmanson’s 2007 book, The Future City on the Inland Sea: A History of Imaginative Geographies on Lake Superior is the winner of the 2007 John Brinckerhoff Jackson Prize awarded by the Association of American Geographers. The annual prize is given to American geographers who write books about the United States which convey the insights of professional geography in language that is interesting and attractive to a lay audience. Our congratulations to Eric for receiving this honor.

John Thorndike, the author of the 2009 memoir, The Last of His Mind: A Year in the Shadow of Alzheimer’s, is interviewed extensively about his caregiving experience in the January 28th issue of AARP Bulletin Today. An excerpt from the book is also included on the AARP site.

Ohio University Press Author on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360
January 28, 2010

Omar Ali, the author of In the Balance of Power: Independent Black Politics and Third-Party Movements in the Unitd States (2008), is scheduled for a roundtable appearance on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” on Friday, January 29th, at 10 p.m. The topic of the discussion will be independent politics and a State of the Union follow-up.

Danuta Mostwin (1921–2010)
January 14, 2010

Ohio University Press mourns the loss of Danuta Mostwin, who died on January 11, 2010. Author of Testaments: Two Novellas of Emigration and Exile and novels, including the acclaimed Ameryko! Ameryko!, Mostwin was the recipient of many international awards for her fiction and for her scholarly studies of the process of immigration adjustment.

A Little Sparrow Told Me

We have heard that Alice Munro’s latest short story collection includes a tip of the hat to a 1983 Swallow Press book, Little Sparrow, about the Russian mathematician and novelist Sophia Kovalevsky. According to Plain Dealer books editor, Karen Long, Munro praises Little Sparrow in her acknowledgments as a book whose "riches" she recommends to readers. Alas, Little Sparrow is now out of print, but used copies are selling for upwards of $170 on the Internet.
