Big Mouth Hawk, Arapaho

Photograph by Alexander Gardner, 1872, Washington, DC.
(69) National Anthropological Archives, Smithsonian Institution.

For his seated portrait, Bi-Nan-Set wears a magnificent Plains hair ornament made of unusually large German silver discs mounted on a strip that is either leather or trade wool. That ornament is attached to another typical man’s hair ornament, a roach—a circular “fluff” of porcupine and deer hair that tapers to a point.
