Suriap, Ute

Photograph by Antonio Zeno Shindler, 1868, Washington, DC.
(1573) National Anthropological Archives, Smithsonian Institution.

Suriap participated in a delegation to Washington in 1868; for his official photograph he wears traditional garments and holds his heavily fringed tobacco bag, just visible hanging against his left leg. His right legging displays a striking but simple beaded design, indicating that the beads are probably relatively large glass “pony” beads—an early European trade good packed in on horses.
