Danny Miller, 1949–2008

Photo of Danny Miller Ohio University Press joins the academic and Appalachian community in mourning the loss of our friend and colleague Danny Miller. Our sympathies go out to his family, friends, and to his associates at Northern Kentucky University, where he was chair of the Department of Literature and Language. Along with Gurney Norman and Sharon Hatfield, Danny co-edited An American Vein: Critical Writings in Appalachian Literature, published in 2005. We will remember him for his energy, his keen insight, and for the generosity that he displayed in all aspects of his life and work.

Cold War and Decolonization in Guinea Wins APC Book Award

Elizabeth Schmidt’s 2007 book, Cold War and Decolonization in Guinea, 1946–1958, is the winner of the African Political Science Group’s Best Book Award. Schmidt’s study provides the historical context behind Guinea’s bold 1958 decision for independence. The APCG is an affiliate of the American Political Science Association, International Studies Association, and African Studies Association. The award will be given at the ASA meeting in Chicago.


Mehigan Poem in NY Times Op-Ed
November 05, 2008

A poem by Joshua Mehigan, the author of The Optimist: Poems, appeared in the November 4th post-election edition of The New York Times. The poem, titled “The Polling Place,” was one of five poems selected for the Times’s Election Day Op-Ed section. Other poems were by John Ashbery, Mary Jo Bang, August Kleinzahler, and J. D. McClatchy.

Fannie Quigley a 2008 WILLA Awards Finalist

Searching for Fannie Quigley is a 2008 finalist for the WILLA Literary Awards honoring women's stories set in the American West. The 2007 biography of a legendary Alaskan pioneer was written by Jane Haigh, the 2007 Alaska historian of the year. Winners will be announced October 24-26 at the Women Writing the West conference in San Antonio, TX. Searching for Fannie Quigley is a finalist in the scholarly nonfiction category.
